Good Friday / Tenebrae service

On Friday, April 7, we will share a meal with our brothers and sisters from Fourth Reformed Church and Indwelling Church and then worship together with them as we remember our Lord’s death through a Tenebrae service. “Tenebrae” is Latin for darkness or shadows. In this unique worship service the lights are slowly dimmed until we are in near darkness to commemorate the death of Jesus and we leave in complete silence. This service is unique both in style and purpose for we focus almost exclusively on the Lord’s death with only the barest hint of what is to come on Sunday. The service features congregational singing, a short message, and dramatic readings, along with the extinguishing of candles (and dimming of house lights) to mark various points of Jesus’ final hours before his crucifixion and death.

The meal begins at 6:00PM in New City’s Community Room and the service begins at 7:00PM in our auditorium. Nursery is available through age 3. We will observe communion together as three churches from different traditions who are united in our shared confession that Jesus is Lord.
